Hi Everyone,

Today, I am going to discuss our wonderful Heidelberg’s Patriot v Atlantan (Patriot) a Grand Champion, Champion (GCh.) (CH.) Heidelberg’s Kodiak v Queirdad (Kodi) son.   He is also the son of Heidelberg’s Atlanta Natashac, a Daughter of Champion Heidelberg’s Natasha Cheyenne that produced GCh. Ch. Best in Show (BIS) winner Heidelberg’s Oklahoma Natashac.

A Two-Year-Old Patriot playing in Pine Bluff, AR at Dog Show in February 2013

Patriot is 2.5 years-of-old and is finally maturing into a fabulous dog.  He is sweet and smart and extremely confident.  He is the perfect size German shepherd at the top of the height standard at 26 inches and at around 100 pounds he will be a trim solid dog.

Patriot does very well at the dog shows, and as he matures he is starting to get a lot of second place and reserve wins.  I suspect that he will reach a point in his maturity where when he starts winning, and once he starts winning he will fly through to his championship.  He will be finished, and we will look back and say, ‘wow that was fast’ as it has been with most our great male champions.

Patriot is a true joy to travel with.  He never has an accident in his crate and when he really needs to be let out of crate he has whine that is distinct.  When he needs an unscheduled bathroom break all we have to do if we are driving is find an exit let him out and he immediately takes care of his business and then he wants to get right back in his crate.

When we are at scheduled breaks, he is great to let out with our girl German shepherds because he romps around and with his playful nature he encourages everyone to run and play fight.  When Patriot is at the shows everyone gets good exercise breaks.

 Hi Everyone,

Today, I am going to switch gears to discuss an issue that has developed with one of our long-time friends.  Monday, I will continue my discussion of our new family members.

We received a call about 12 1/2 year-old Rocky, one of my all-time favorite German Shepherd Dogs.  Rocky has stopped eating and drinking and is throwing up bile.  He has rapidly gone down health wise in the last month and it is time to say goodbye until we meet again.

Rocky started his life out as a promising show dog and was sold to Connie who lived in Mannford, Oklahoma.  Connie and Rocky were extremely close and did everything together.  Connie after a year and half was diagnosed with breast cancer, and so Rocky was boarded out here at Keystone German Shepherds & Kennels while Connie was going through treatment and too sick to take care of Rocky.  We got to become very close to Rocky.  Connie lost her battle to cancer, but her love and fighting spirit was not lost on Rocky.  Connie’s husband gave us Rocky after her death because Rocky presence was just too painful of a reminder of Connie.

When Rocky came to stay with us he was not the same after Connie’s passing.  Rocky was very depressed and grieving.  We decided the best thing for Rocky was find him a good home with children that could take his mind of his loss.  We re-homed Rocky to such a family, and Rocky began to recover from his grief.  Now ten years later after a wonderful and spoiled life, Rocky will be reunited with Connie.  I imagine that they are taking one of their long walks along a beautiful mountain stream.

Losing your best friend after 12 years is the hardest part of owning a German Shepherd Dog.  It hurts as bad as losing a close family member and the grieving process is very similar.  I am comforted in knowing that because God loves us that we will be reunited with all our companions someday in Heaven.  He will not withhold any joy from us including being reunited with our best friends.  I am not going to start preaching in this blog, but there are several Bible verses that support this hope of being reunited with our beloved German Shepherd Dogs.  Personally I believe Heaven will be filled with cats and dogs.

German Shepherd Dog Days of Summer

German Shepherd Dog Days of Summer

Hi Everyone,

Just a hodgepodge update of the going-on at Keystone German Shepherds & Kennels.  Well it is summer and while we have been blessed with rain and cooler temperature than the last two summers, it does increase my workload.  Now that our grass has reached an unseemly height, I have to mow again.

I have been unable to blog the last six days due to our schedule and the fact that I am having to re-surface our asphalt driveway, which distance is over an eighth of a mile.  Due to lack of maintenance over the last several years, it has taken all week to fill cracks and resurface the black top with the help of a wonderful young high school student, Michael.  Even with all the work and time invested, we still are only halfway done with the driveway.  Therefore, my blogs will be Spartan in the next couple of weeks as I will be mowing, weeding eating, and repairing the driveway.  I also have started weaning our three litters that are inside and growing well.  I am excited about the wonderful puppies that we are going to have available starting in mid-September.

I am proud to announce that we had our Canine Good Citizen Testing on Saturday, July 20, 2013.  We had four German shepherds take the test with three passing.  The puppy that failed had only been to Keystone’s Canine Good Citizen Class and Basic Obedience Class four times before the testing and he was not quite ready.  He will pass with a few more training classes.  Nevertheless, congratulations to the Mia and her owners Daniel and Kat Gettel, Tank and his owners Darran and Shelley Douglas, and Glory and her owner Gail Reed for readily passing the Canine Good Citizen Test and earning their Certificates.  We will have our next free Canine Good Citizen Class and Basic Obedience Class Saturday morning at 10:30 AM on July 27, 2013.  Please attend if you can make it.

Hi Everyone,

We have some wonderful brand new Firecracker Day puppies from Champion Heidelberg’s, Grand Champion, Champion (GCh. Ch.) Kodiak v Queridad (Kodi) and Champion pointed Heidelberg’s Yasmin Paige born July 4 2013.  We are very excited about this litter and know what to expect from this breeding since it is a repeat breeding from last year.  Kodi is also a full time Service dog as well as one of top stud dogs.

Kodi and Yasmin produce large strong and self-confident puppies.  All Kodi’s males are finishing out at 100 to 110 pound lean weight, whereas Kodi only weighs 95 pounds at age five-years.  Kodi is definitely producing large, but within the breed standard.  Kodi puppies are solid medium temperament puppies that are confident, but not too dominant.

We will likely have a couple of champion prospects from this litters. We will update the progress of this litters on this blog as well as our web page: https://kgsd.inventivehorizons.com/PuppiesForSale.htm.

Note: On the 4th, we out on the lake in our boat to watch the fireworks, and my son, Spencer borrowed my I-phone just before he slipped and fell in the lake.  He is okay, but my I-phone died.  Fortunately, I had insurance and will get a replacement sometime this week.  Anyway, pictures of the new litter will be posted as soon as I get my replacement phone.

German Shepherd Dog (Cleaning Up After Your Shepherd)

Exploring the vast prairie of the Washita National Wildlife Refuge

Exploring the vast prairie of the Washita National Wildlife Refuge

Hi Everyone,

Today’s discussion is anything but glamorous.  However, it is an important discussion for the health of your German Shepherd Dog and possibly your family.  German Shepherd Dogs are unusually clean and try to get as far away from their feces as possible, and often will choose one specific area in the yard to defecate.  Our Heidelberg German shepherd Dogs will actually try to bury their feces after defecating.  They do this by scratching soil and grass over their poop after they defecate.  As the owner of a German Shepherd Dog, it is your responsibility to clean up after them.  If you live in a subdivision consider your neighbors olfactory sensitivity especially in the summer. Be a good neighbor and pick up your dog’s poop daily.

All dogs will get stomach worms and worms such as hook, tape, and round contaminate the environment with their eggs when your German Shepherd Dog defecates.  Worms such as hook and round worms can infest your yard with their eggs for months and in some cases for years if you allow the feces to break down and spread into your soil.   The infected backyard can become a low risk health hazard to small children that could become infected if they contact the infected soil and then stick their hands in their mouth.  For hookworms a person can become infected by simply contacting the infected soil with bare skin.  Fortunately, the hookworms cannot survive in the human body and soon die upon entering the skin, and thus become a slightly annoying rash for a few days. This rash is known as “plumbers itch”. In addition, if you allow your yard to become infested with worm eggs, your dog will continue to be re-infected costing you unnecessary money to treat your German Shepherd Dog for worms.

Feces left in your yard will also attract and breed biting flies and the common houseflies.  If flies drive you nuts in the summer then do yourself a favor and keep your yard clean and the number of flies around and in your house will decrease.

All the above can be avoided by simply picking up the poop every day.  Most German Shepherd Dogs will defecate two to four times a day.  It should take you no more than five minutes to keep your German Shepherd Dog healthy, happy and worm free, as well as keep your yard clean.

Purchase a Pooper Scooper at your local pet store.  The average cost will be approximately twenty dollars, but is well worth it because it allows you to clean up fast and efficiently.
