 Hi Everyone,

We at Keystone German Shepherds have available some wonderfully good deals on some older German Shepherd Dog puppies.  We now have younger puppies available and even more that will be ready to go to their new home in the upcoming weeks.  Since we have several 16 to 18 week old puppies, we have discounted the price down to as low as $1,000.00 to $1,200.00.  These puppies are basically potty trained and are ready to start basic obedience training.

Most everyone that is looking for a puppy wants the cute young fluffy ones, but they are only at this stage for a few weeks.  Actually it is so much easier for the new owner and better for the puppies choose an older puppy.  By the time a puppy is over 15-weeks-old it has no more interest in living with its litter-mates and they prefer human companionship over other dogs.  Therefore, you have no sadness when you bring an older puppy home.  In addition, they are mentally developed enough to understand the house rules and they do not want to go to the bathroom in your home.

If you are considering getting a German shepherd puppy consider getting one of our older puppies and save a little money on some very high quality shepherds.

Hi Everyone,

This is a quick post today to remind and encourage everyone about the start of our new Canine Good Citizen (CGC) and Basic Obedience Class at Keystone German Shepherds & Kennels on Saturday, September 7, 2013 at 10:30 am. There is no charge for this class and all breeds and ages are invited.  The only requirement is that your dogs must be up to date on all their vaccinations.

We concluded our summer training session in August with several owners and dogs passing the American Kennel Club (AKC) Canine Good Citizen Class.  Since the conclusion of that class AKC has announced a new advanced level for Canine Good Citizen.  With the introduction of AKC Community Canine, the AKC’s CGC program now provides a comprehensive three- level training program for dogs and their owners. Beginning with AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy, progressing to Canine Good Citizen and now to AKC Community Canine, the CGC program trains dogs through all stages of life to be well behaved in society.  We are excited about the new program and will match our training class exercises to meet the qualifications of this advanced level of training.

We Cannot Wait to go to School

We Cannot Wait to go to School

We look forwards to seeing new faces and old friends.  Please make it out for our free training.  The more participants that we have makes for a better class and training opportunities for all.

AKC Community Canine expands on CGC skills and lays the beginning foundation for obedience, rally and therapy dog work.  Many of you with young dogs are planning on moving through to bigger and better things for your puppy, and we thank you for allowing us to be a part of this journey.

 Hi Everyone,

I am so sorry that I have been so sporadic on these posts.  Ever since mid-June it seems that I have lost control of my time since I have been unbelievably busy.  However, with summer ending and all the associated chores, I am hopeful I will have a little more time to share with you my stories and knowledge of the wonderful German Shepherd Dog.  To make up for my tardiness I have a true and inspiring story for you today.

A longtime friend and Heidelberg German Shepherd Dog owner, John had his life saved by his beloved male Heidelberg, but not in a way you would ever expect.   John is a Heidelberg dog collector and has gotten into breeding and showing Heidelberg German Shepherd Dogs, but while over the years John has had several Heidelberg’s, he had his favorite male, Gunner  that went everywhere with John.  Gunner was approximately five-years-old and had already finished his Championship and was John’s prize stud dog.

One day John came home and Gunner immediately came to John and rather than giving John the regular greeting of sitting and waiting for John to lean over so Gunner could give him a kiss, Gunner immediately stuck his nose in John’s calf and started licking.  John thought maybe that he had brushed up against a girl that was in-season and did not think too much of the calf licking.  However, Gunner was persistent in licking John’s calf so much so that John took a shower so Gunner would stop.   Gunner did not stop.  This went on for a week, and so much so that Gunner got scolded and put outside several days.

John thought Gunner had developed some kind of personality problem and was upset that his prize stud dog and companion had become Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) over John’s leg.  While deciding what he was going to do with Gunner, John had the television on and a program came on about how European Doctors were using dogs to detect cancer.

John scheduled an appointment with his doctor, and he found that John had under-the-skin melanoma in the calf.  Almost anyone that has under-the-skin melanoma by the time they feel sick and seek medical help they usually die five days later because, by this time, it has spread throughout the entire body and is the brain and the lungs.

John had major surgery on his calf to remove the cancer and for two years had undergone chemo treatments.  He is finally cancer free.  Needless to say, Gunner was even elevated to a higher status in John’s house and while ten-years-old now, Gunner is still doing well.

 Hi Everyone,

When watching Heidelberg’s Daphne Oklahoman (Daphne) yesterday, my first thought after saying to myself she is perfect was how blessed I am.  I do not see myself as particularly talented and to consistently have such wonderful and nearly perfect German Shepherd Dogs, I can only be thankful to God for his blessings upon me and my family.  Daphne is a Daughter of Grand Champion (GCh.) Champion (Ch.) Best in Show (BIS) winner Heidelberg’s Oklahoma Natashac (Kay) and Ch. Heidelberg’s Bogie v Charisman.  Kay is a Ch. Heidelberg’s Natasha Cheyenne and Ch. Heidelberg’s Dargo v Angeliq daughter.

The wonderful thing about Daphne is that she is an exact copy of Kay, but where Kay was a little bit too small at approximately 65 pounds, Daphne is going to finish out at approximately 85 pounds.  With the size of her Grandmother Natasha and the movement and structure of Kay and the energy and Charisma of Dargo there is little doubt that Daphne could be campaigned to be the number one German Shepherd Dog in the country.  Will that happen probably not because of the expenses related to such a campaign, but maybe if we can find a sponsor for her in the next couple of years it could possibly happen.

Daphne already has 3 champion points from the puppy class with me showing her and when we start showing again this fall, I suspect that she will finish quickly like her mother, Kay.  Kay finished in three weekends going breed every day and winning several group placements.  Kay is our first BIS Winner and multiple-Group winner.  In 2009 at Kay’s first competing show, I showed her in the 12 to 18 month class, I won the class, but Kay was jumping and playing not showing well at all because she was too happy to be with me.  Brian Livingston, one of the best professional handlers in the country, saw Kay with me in the show ring.  After I won the class, Brian came up to me and said, ‘if you will let me show her for the rest of the weekend, I’ll show her for free, and I guarantee that she will go Best of Breed and win in the Groups’.  Kay won Best of Breed and took Group 1 and just missed out on winning Best in Show.  The next day she won Breed and took Group 2.  Kay is a superstar that rarely comes around and Daphne is in the same class as her mom.

I would like to take a moment and tell you about one of our Grand Champions CH. Heidelberg’s Oklahoma Natashac known as Kay. Just over a week ago she was found by me in the play yard with what appeared to be bloat, and was quickly rushed to the vet’s office. Even though she was in extreme pain she was happy to be around me and wagged her tail even during some of the times she was crying. Fortunately Dr. Harvey was able to do surgery and remove the blockage in Kay’s intestines. Little did I know what I was in for as she came to recover, Kay however knows exactly what she wants.

The first thing that my dad and I figured out was that Kay did not like being put in crate where she could not see people. It did not matter if you were in the room with her she wants to be able to see part of your body at all times. Simply moving her crate solved this barking in protest problem, but only during the first few days of recovery. As Kay has gotten better she has shown herself to be a very unique character. Typically when she would see me as I arrived at my parents she would jump and spin in the air barking to say, “Hello”, which is how I was able to spot that she was in distress, so easily.

What I did not realize is what a ham she is. Since I am watching my parents’ house and business I have had extra time to spend with her. Kay has always been one to prance around happily, she moves so beautifully that it obvious why she was easy to finish and get her grand championship. It is amazing to me how much spunk she has even when she is in pain, but even more amazing is all the little things I have not noticed before. See as Kay has got to feeling better she has been able to manipulate me more and more. Now it is not good enough to see me, she must be in the room with me, and it is not good enough that I take her out to potty and watch her, I must walk with her the whole way. She has been attached to my hip for the last several days and it has been great fun.

Kay loves to over run, and loves to lead so when you are walking with her she is a few steps in front of you prancing as if she is floating on a cloud and when you stop she knows that you have because she is carefully watching, but instead of stopping with you she prances directly in front of you as if to say, “Here I am, I’m so glad you got to see me!” It nearly doesn’t matter the circumstance Kay is going to find a way to dance herself right in front of you and look up with her big eyes and then give a big smile. She absolutely loves being the center of attention!

Right now she is very skinny as she is recovering and she has found the best place to lay while I write this is under my feet where she can keep a close eye on me to make sure I will keep a close eye on her.

Introducing a New Puppy to Existing Dogs in the Home

Exploring the vast prairie of the Washita National Wildlife Refuge

Exploring the vast prairie of the Washita National Wildlife Refuge

Hi Everyone,

Introducing two or more dogs to a new German Shepherd Dog puppy can be an anxious experience because you will be worried that the older or larger dogs could potentially hurt the puppy.  The first thing you must remember to do is present a relaxed mental attitude so that your existing dog(s) does not become anxious or nervous at the time of the introduction.  So take a deep breath and carry your new puppy into the house and allow your other dog(s) to come up and sniff the new puppy while you sit on the couch loving the new German Shepherd Dog puppy.  Once the existing dog(s) lose interest in the new puppy allow the puppy to roam around the house and approach the existing dog(s).  If the existing dogs do not lose interest in the new puppy, after several minutes in your lap place the new puppy on the floor and allow the dogs to meet each other.  This should be closely monitored by you until you are absolutely sure the older dog(s) will not harm the new puppy.  If you have outside dogs then the same exercise can be done in your backyard.

German Shepherd Dogs are Gregarious and Want to Be Part of a Pack

German Shepherd Dogs are Gregarious and Want to Be Part of a Pack

You should have a fair idea about the tolerance level and aggressiveness of the older and larger dog(s); therefore, if a possibility exists for the existing dog to snap at the new German Shepherd Dog puppy, you should do the introduction while the existing dog(s) are on leash, which may require the help of family members.  Even if you have an older dog with a solid temperament if it is a shepherd or larger size dog, I would be hesitant to leave the new German Shepherd Dog puppy under 16 weeks-of-age alone with the existing dog without a couple of days of close supervision.  One single act of aggression from the older dog intended only to teach the new puppy manners can severely injure the puppy if you are not there to prevent or intervene.  After a couple of days of close supervision, you should know if it is safe to leave the dogs together unattended.

If you have friends with dogs then you can do the introduction in the same manner at your friend’s house.  The process should be the same if your friend brings their dog(s) to your house.  If you are introducing new puppies to each other there is no reason to go through any pretense, just introduce them and enjoy the show as they discover each other.

As always with all puppies, any dogs that the puppy comes into contact with should be up to date on all vaccinations.  There is little worse than losing a new puppy to parvo or distemper because they came into contact with an unvaccinated dog that was shedding viruses.
